Fe Del Mundo: An Icon

Ever since I was a kid, I've always dreamt of becoming a scientist. Whenever I play alone or with friends, I imagine myself as a doctor, nurse, or anyone related to science. I am currently taking a course that is related to science and medicine. Luckily, along the way, I met someone who inspired me even more to continue on the journey that I've started. This person is an icon and truly an inspiration, not only for me, but also for everyone. This someone is a woman.

She is a woman of science, a great pediatrician, an inventor, and a Filipina. She is Fe Villanueva Del Mundo, the inventor of the bamboo incubator and the founder of the first ever pediatric hospital in the country known as "The Children's Medical Center," now "Fe Del Mundo Medical Center." Due to her skills and greatness, she became a research fellow at Harvard in pediatrics and became known as "The Angel of Santo Tomas" after she established a makeshift hospice within the internment camp at UST. She also received numerous awards and tokens because of her contributions to science. These are only some of the reasons why I admire and idolize Dra. Fe Del Mundo. Aside from these reasons, she is also a symbol of women's empowerment in the field of medicine. As we all know, women have experienced a lot of discrimination and inequality in science because people doubt their capabilities. Fe proved to everyone that these things did not affect her at all, because she still became very successful and significant. As a student and an aspiring medical practitioner, Fe's life experiences inspired me even more to keep on going despite the criticism that I will face as a woman. My dream was to become a pediatrician because I love the innocence kids and young people have, but my parents are discouraging me. However, because of Dra. Fe, I am now sure of what specialization I will take. These are all thanks to the great pediatrician and inventor, Dra. Fe Del Mundo.

Dra. Fe Del Mundo may not be able to read and know how she inspired and motivated me as a student, a Filipina, and a woman, but I still want to thank her for being an icon and an inspiration. I only read a glimpse of her story, yet I was already inspired by her. To Dra. Fe Del Mundo, you are an icon.
